LIZZY’S DOUBT OVER BID FOR THIRD GOLD

- By GEORGE CLARKE

DOUBLE Olympic skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold insists she is yet to make a decision on her future in the sport. Yarnold and Britain’s other Winter Olympic medallists congregated at Heathrow airport for a homecoming celebration yesterday — where it was even colder than Pyeongchang. The 29-year-old (below) was beset by a chest infection but in winning skeleton gold in South Korea she surpassed figure skater Jeannette Altwegg and ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean to become Britain’s most decorated winter athlete. Yarnold, who described her medals as being as precious as ‘Frodo’s Rings’, would not be drawn on whether she would attempt to complete the trilogy and go for gold in Beijing in 2022. ‘I haven’t had that conversation (Beijing),’ she said. Yarnold hopes that her success can inspire more young people to try skeleton bobsleigh. ‘I want to show that a normal kid can win two golds,’ she said. ‘I want to give people a chance to try skeleton.’ Her two medals put her in an elite list of Britons who have won gold at two Olympics, with many of those being knighted. Yarnold, who already has an MBE, says she would love to receive the honour. ‘When I got my MBE from the Queen her eyes glistened. To do that again would be amazing.’ Meanwhile, big air bronze medallist Billy Morgan has said more should be done to raise awareness about trick-based skiing and snowboarding events. He said: ‘There’s talks of a freestyle academy. They’re always rammed with kids doing rad stuff. So build them!’
