Convicted for an act of politically related criminal damage, and again after being arrested at a UM counter- demonstration against a vigil in Trafalgar Square to mark the first anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre of blacks in South africa.
Max Mosley was arrested at the same event and convicted of obstructing a policeman. ayres visited Dachau with Max and Keith Gibson before driving with them to Venice. There he organised the seating arrangement for the final meeting of the inner circle at a conference of European neo-fascists, including prominent former Nazis. at the table, Sir Oswald and Max sat alongside a former Waffen-SS officer who was jailed at the end of the war.
ayres later recanted his fascist beliefs, and today says: ‘There are lots of things in life where you look back and you wish you hadn’t done that.
‘Some of the people I mixed with were unreconstructed Nazis, absolutely appalling. I am ashamed to say I was complicit by my silence at the time, and since then I have always felt guilty.’
