High heels in the snow with a baby on the way … is that such a good idea, Kate?

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

SHE refused to kick off her high heels when she was expecting George and Charlotte – and the Duchess of Cambridge wasn’t going to let the current icy weather stop her doing the same during her latest pregnancy.

Kate, whose third child is due in April, ventured out into the cold for a preview of an exhibition on Victorian photographers at the National Portrait Gallery in London for on Wednesday night.

Despite thick snow and sub-zero temperatures, she arrived without a coat, showing off a £490 Orla Kiely dress. She also eschewed practical – and, no doubt, more comfortable – flat shoes in favour of a pair of £495 Gianvito Rossi praline suede pumps with a fourinch slim stiletto heel.

Many experts advise women to avoid high heels in the later stages of pregnancy, warning that they put them at risk of falls and can cause problems with feet, ankles and ligaments.

But even with the slippery conditions underfoot, Kate, 36, looked happy and at ease in her ensemble, which she completed with thin, flesh-coloured tights, Kiki McDonough amethyst and pink tourmaline earrings and a Jimmy Choo clutch.

Having studied history of art at the University of St Andrews – where she met William – the Duchess undertook her undergraduate thesis on the birth of art photography in England.

She had helped to curate the new Victorian Giants exhibition at the gallery, where she is a patron.

The showcase features the work of luminaries such as Julia Margaret Cameron and Lewis Carroll – and the Duchess marvelled at the ability of Victorian photographers to persuade children stay still.
