‘There used to be a view that people should grow old gracefully, retire from public life, sit in a chair and crochet blankets. I was never going to do that.

‘I’m not conventional and I love trying new things. That’s what I mean by “ageing disgracefully”. I go to places and meet people most would give their right arm to. It’s never occurred to me to retire.’
