WHAT IS TESTOSTERONE?

-

TESTOSTERONE is a naturally occurring hormone that helps develop typically male characteristics such as a deep voice and body hair. Testosterone patches are used by people who are not able to produce enough of the hormone. They are available from pharmacies with a prescription. The medication is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream.

HOW DOES IT BENEFIT CYCLISTS?

Testosterone can increase muscle mass and strength. When used in smaller doses, it can help muscle recovery and increase endurance. It is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances but the fact that testosterone is naturally occurring makes it difficult to detect.

HAS IT BEEN USED IN THE SPORT BEFORE?

Lance Armstrong admitted to taking the hormone during his seven back-to-back Tour de France victories from 1999 to 2005.
