Will anthem lose ‘sexist’ Fatherland?
GERMANY has long been known as the Fatherland – but that could end after its equality chief said the national anthem should be more ‘gender sensitive’.
Equality commissioner Kristin Rose-Moehring wants to strike out male references, proposing the removal of words such as ‘fatherland’ and ‘brotherly’.
If implemented, Germany would be the ‘Heimatland,’ or homeland, as opposed to the ‘Vaterland’, or fatherland.
She also suggested changing the lyric ‘brotherly with heart and hand’ to ‘courageously with heart and hand’.
