ZOO man David Attenborou­gh has been appointed £5,000-a-year controller of BBC 2 — which surprised many of the Corporatio­n’s 20,000 employees because he leapfrogge­d many long-serving TV executives. Attenborou­gh used to spend six months of the year hunting animals for Zoo Quest, the other six writing and lecturing.

MARCH 5, 1969

TWINS Ronald and Reginald Kray and four members of their ‘firm’ were found guilty last night of murder. Three others, including eldest Kray brother Charles, were convicted as accessorie­s. All will be sentenced today. [The verdicts in the London gangland killings of Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie and George Cornell came at the end of what was then the most costly Old Bailey hearing ever.]
