TRY A CAREER CHANGE

IT IS so important to have passion and purpose in life. After 30 years of working in the City, I began to feel old and depressed, as if I was just coasting into retirement. When I was made redundant at 52, it came as a real shock. However, it turned out to be the most liberating opportunity for a fresh start. Since then, I’ve set up my own business, I take more risks and finally I have a skip in my step again.

SPLASH OUT ON MAKE-UP

AS I’VE grown older, I’ve noticed my skin needs more of a glow. Last year I invested in Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow primer, £38.50, Filmstar Bronze & Glow set, £49, and The Retoucher Conceal & Treat Concealer Stick, £25. They’re so nourishing, but best of all, there are lots of online video tutorials to show you how to apply it professionally.

FITTER AFTER 50

TODAY, I am more muscular than ever. I did my first half-marathon last year and now understand the power of yoga — after hating both for years! When I turned 50, I realised I needed to protect my body against ageing ailments. If you’re not naturally sporty, the trick is to change your mindset from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HAIR

I REFUSE to conform to stereotypes about how women of a certain age should look. As a result, I’m constantly changing my hair. I visit the salon every two months — it’s been long, short, red, blonde and brunette. Now I always tailor it to my lifestyle — for example, as a runner, I prioritise keeping it long enough to tie up.

MID-LIFE FASHION RULES

MY body shape has changed a lot with age and it frustrated me that nothing fitted as well. This inspired me to set up a made-to-measure clothing service, as no one is the same standard size. It’s also taught me that sleeves, knee-length hems and zips at the sides of trousers are universally more flattering in mid-life.
