RAF airlifts supplies to homes STILL cut off by snow

- By Tom Payne

THE RAF has been called in to airlift emergency supplies to areas that remain cut off after last week’s snowstorms.

Although temperatures are turning milder, parts of rural Cumbria are still unreachable by road.

Yesterday, an RAF Chinook helicopter was scrambled to deliver food, coal and logs to isolated communities. Royal Marines helped the crew with the deliveries.

Some areas in the north Pennines, including Fellside, South Stainmore and Alston, have been cut off for five days due to snow and the rugged terrain, and will remain so today.

Laura Seaton, 38, from Nenthead, near Alston, said that in some cases residents had been forced to burn their furniture to stay warm, because severe snowdrifts meant that coal lorries had been unable to make deliveries.

Troops will continue to deliver supplies until workers clear deep snow from the roads.
