THE Government might abolish hanging for murderers if a more humane execution method can be found, Lord Chancellor, Viscount Kilmuir, assured the Lords last night. Doctor Lord Amulree suggested lethal gas, with six taps turned on by six people. ‘Only one would contain the gas and no one would know who was responsibl­e,’ he said.

A TEAM of female drama students dressed as chickens will call on people at breakfast time soon to ask: ‘Are you eating an egg?’ Those who are will get a £1 Premium Bond. Those who are not will get half a dozen eggs. The British Egg Marketing Board will have them wear inflatable yellow costumes, beak bonnets and shoes like claws.
