Hate you lots! Gran’s card ‘vandalised at sorting office’
ROYAL Mail is investigating after a great-grandmother received a Mother’s Day card that had been opened and covered in abusive messages.
Dorothy Hopkins, 85, was horrified after she read the card sent by her loving daughter Mandy.
A message scrawled inside described Mrs Hopkins as a ‘dirty old s***’ along with a host of other obscenities written in black marker pen.
Royal Mail launched an inquiry after it became clear the card had been intercepted by someone at the sorting office.
Mandy’s cheery sign-off message was even changed to say ‘hate you lots’.
Speaking from her home in Woodley, Berkshire, Mrs Hopkins said: ‘I am so shocked, I haven’t been able to bring myself to read the message fully.
‘It is an absolute disgrace. If it was someone’s idea of a joke, it was in terribly bad taste and has left me really upset. ‘They even signed it as from “the lounge sorting office”.
‘I have six children, eight grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren and I was really pleased to receive six Mother’s Day cards – but I can only put up five because Mandy’s has been defaced by someone at the Royal Mail.’
Royal Mail said: ‘We are very sorry to hear about this and the understandable distress that it has caused Mrs Hopkins. We are urgently investigating what has happened.’
