WHAT’S IN IT?

-

We reveal the ingredients in everyday health products. This week: vicks Sinex Decongestant Nasal Spray

Oxymetazoline hydrochloride: This chemical is the decongestant, it works by shrinking the expanded blood vessels in your nose that can cause a stuffy feeling.

Don’t use a nasal spray more often than recommended as it can make the cells in your nose dependent on the spray, so they no longer naturally shrink — making the congestion last longer. Sodium citrate dihydrate: Sour and salty, this acts as a buffer to control the acidity of the spray.

This is important as it affects how well the other ingredients are absorbed. Sodium citrate dihydrate has also recently been found to be able to temporarily restore the sense of smell in those who have lost the ability. Menthol: Extracted from peppermint oil, this has a cooling effect in the lining of the nose when you breathe in. Your body interprets this sensation as being able to breathe easier, despite this having no effect on the airflow.

Chlorhexidine

gluconate: An antiseptic that helps to kill bacteria and fight the infection causing a blocked nose. Chlorhexidine is also used to clean surgical equipment.

Camphor: Found in the oil in rosemary leaves, this provides a cold sensation and has been shown in trials to relieve inflammation and congestion.
