SO THe hard left is now dominated by toffs (mail)? It’s curious how these things pan out. my grandfather was a Bolshevik and a jobbing gardener for ‘rab’ Butler (conservative mP, Saffron Walden 1929-65).
my grandfather encouraged my father to go to a grammar school in Braintree. my father then joined the army and, during World War II, worked on the development of radar, and later for raf Signals command.
my father and my mother encouraged myself and my elder brother to go to a grammar school (Sir William Borlase’s School, marlow, which is still a grammar school).
my brother was the first of the family to go to college, and I was the first to go to university. my daughter gained a first from durham.
after three generations of taking personal responsibility and parental encouragement, I’m proud to still be a ‘worker’. BERnARD SHELLEy, Lyne, Surrey.
