THE rail network that fans out from Cardiff into the South Wales valleys took coal from the mines and linked rural and urban communities. ON AND OFF THE VALLEY LINES (RADIO 4, 11AM) takes us on a journey along the Valley Lines, taking in glimpses of gardens and street scenes and overheard conversations. We also hear how this network could bring new hope to an area suffering from economic inactivity and social deprivation.

ALL this week, Clare Balding’s HORSE STORY (RADIO 4, 1.45PM) is looking at the ever-changing relationship between horses and humans. Today, she looks at the emotive subject of warhorses. For thousands of years, horses have been used by humans for conquest and battle the whole world over. With this in mind, Clare visits the

King’s Troop quarters in Woolwich, where horses are trained for modern warfare and ceremonial duties.

FOLLOWING the sad news of the death of Ken Dodd on Sunday, there’s a welcome repeat tonight for HOW TICKLED I’VE BEEN! (RADIO 2, 11PM), a celebration of the comedy genius originally broadcast in 2013, presented by Liza Tarbuck. Doddy (pictured) talks about his childhood in Knotty Ash and about his 65-year career, and there are tributes from friends and fans including Russ Abbot, Roy Hudd, Jim Moir, Jimmy Tarbuck and Claire Sweeney.
