Carragher must go
I HAD a 20-year career in professional football, and as a goalkeeper, was a captive target for the opposing fans. I was subject to some of the most vile, verbal and physical abuse
imaginable, including the dangerous act of coin throwing in the Eighties.
A little less harmless of course, I was often pelted with meat pies, which, after taking a bite, I would return to the fans with gusto.
I had a bit of a fiery temper, and teammates and opponents were used to my somewhat angry reaction, which got me in trouble.
However, never in my entire career or indeed my entire life, have I ever reacted by spitting at someone (I do, though, recall punching a Peterborough fan for spitting in my face!). No matter how much stick he had, there is no excuse for a man of Jamie Carragher’s experience to react in that way. Totally unacceptable, and no matter how many apologies, unforgivable. I cannot see how he can continue in a job where he has to give his opinion on incidents that may involve a player reacting violently toward an opponent, or, er, spitting at him?
