The lost girls

I AM so upset by this scandal of girls being sexually abused in Telford and the shocking double standards it exposes.

On the one side, a bunch of actresses ready to walk into a monster’s bedroom in hope of landing a role.

On the other side, little 14-year-old girls being savagely and repeatedly raped by other monsters.

My question is: ‘Where are all the “me too” luvvies to support those defenceless ones?’

I have little pity for the first group, who got support from all of the industry and managed to land careers, etc. But I really feel devastated for the second group, who got no support, had their lives torn apart and may never recover. CATHERINEPAPINLABAZORDIERE, Côtes

Disenfranchised

VINCe CABLe was a young man of 32 when he enjoyed voting in the 1975 eeC referendum. I was nine.

he, and others like him, then spent 41 years doing everything they could to stop people like me having the same privilege.

I wanted a say for 33 years of my enfranchised life; my youth was spent stuck in an organisation I never voted to join, and it is the fault of people like Vince Cable that I grew old waiting for a say.

At a time when calls for assisted suicide could encourage older people to feel that they are an irrelevance, I find it chilling that so many people are happy to say that older generations should have had no say in the referendum because they have ‘had their chance’ and ‘lived their lives’.

Who should we disenfranchise next, after the old and experienced? The mentally ill? The disabled? Anyone at all with whom we do not agree?

VICTORLAUNERT, MatlockBath, ATTeNTION Vince Cable: I was almost 80 at the time of the referendum. I voted Remain, as did many of my contemporaries. We were democratically defeated. Now let’s shut up and get on with it.

Happy days

MR hAMMOND’S Spring Statement was a joy to behold. At last, good news. Not for the Labour Party, who seek to peddle gloom and doom.

No crown for Camilla

IT SICKeNS me to read how Prince Charles’s former mistress, now wife, Camilla is advising Meghan and that she previously advised Kate.

She also lunched with the late lovely Princess Diana after her engagement and quizzed her over whether she intended to hunt. The relief was plain on her face apparently when Diana said no, allowing her and Charles to continue their cosy times — what a hypocrite!

have people really forgotten how she betrayed an innocent young girl who was thrown to the wolves? If that woman is ever made queen, I will be finished with Royal Family.

Camilla knew exactly what she was doing, waiting on the sidelines to resume her position as mistress.

Hawking the star

STePheN hAWKING was a great scientist who helped mould our understanding of the universe, even if most people couldn’t understand his work. he was also a very successful author.

his work included the study of black holes, which may be symbolic as he did not wallow in a personal black hole when he became ill, but rather showed that disability need not stop you.

his wit was shown through his cameos on TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and — a piece of trivia — he was the only person to appear on Star Trek as themselves. A great man.

Organ donor payback

MY BROTheR received kidneys from a live donor, so the issue of organ donation matters to me.

Of course anybody should be able to opt out of the proposed new scheme, for whatever reason. But this should be on the understanding that they also opt out of receiving an organ should ever the need arise.

Leeching off the NHS

The fact that the NhS wasted £500,000 on one lot of pointless consultancy fees (Mail) did not surprise me.

A recent study examined management consultants commissioned over a four-year period by the NhS and concluded that they decreased efficiency and are costing an increasing amount of money, £640 million in 2014 alone.

Sadly, politicians and managers are

not interested in evaluating the use of management consultants, they just prefer to do useless and expensive things rather than our improve frontline services.

If we are to face the challenges of the NhS, the last thing we need is management consultants. richard SPicer,

Nailed it!

IT WAS great to see the article on excessive elf ’ n’safety concerns being ignored by a school (Mail).

When I was in nursery education in Sutton, Surrey, one of the favourite activities was woodwork for four and five-year-olds.

The children had to decide what they wanted to make, which size wood was needed and how many nails to select. The sawing and hammering were always supervised and nobody lost a finger or even had an accident. It was a great activity for intellectual, physical and social development.

Male dilemma

SARAh VINe’S page (Daily Mail, Wednesday) gave hope to many young men, currently struggling to communicate with the opposite sex — made worse because of the insidiousness that is political correctness.

Since when was a population driven to near silence when trying to communicate with another human being? Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Congratulations Sarah Vine.

Inequality in the arts

OPeRA and ballet are funded, pop concerts are not; athletes are funded, football is not; art galleries are funded, graffiti and street art are not.

Notice a thread? Professional, middle- class, Arts Council types get funding; working-man stuff does not. PauL brazier, kingswood, Glos.
