THE boss of the largest tobacco company in the world had a 37pc pay increase last year.

Nicandro Durante, chief executive of British American Tobacco, was paid £11.4m in 2017 compared to £8.3m a year earlier. The Brazilian father of two joined in 2011 to become BAT’s first non-British boss. Since joining, his total pay has more than doubled. The cigar-smoking opera fan was paid a base salary of £1.24m in 2017, up from £1.19m in 2016. The rest of his package included £9.63m in bonuses.
