PM’s cuddle for a little boy blue...

- By Fionn Hargreaves

FIRST it was fist-bumps and selfies in Salisbury. Yesterday Theresa May was given another warm welcome – and a newborn baby to cuddle.

As a poll showed the public think she is handling the aftermath of the Salisbury attack best, the Prime Minister was cheered by voters for the second day in a row.

She was opening a councilbuilt estate in Wokingham, Berkshire, when she was handed six-day-old Ted Young.

Mrs May, in a navy jacket on top of a blue blazer and white shirt, looked relaxed as she cradled the sleeping baby in his blue babygro. She also posed for pictures outside the estate with Ted’s parents, Sam Young and Robyn Beard, who will be moving into one the 68 affordable homes, as well as the newborn’s 18month-old sister Daisy.

The Prime Minister’s appearance comes after she dispelled her ‘Maybot’ image during a trip to Salisbury on Thursday. She was presented with flowers, paused for a selfie with locals and even gave a woman a fist-bump.

A schoolboy even shouted: ‘I love you Theresa’ as she got into her car which made her turn and smile before replying ‘thank you’. The Prime Minister has previously spoken about her anguish at not being able to have children.

In 2016, she revealed she and her husband Philip tried to get expert advice, but were still unable to conceive.

She said: ‘Of course, we were both affected by it. You see friends who now have grownup children, but you accept the hand that life deals you. Sometimes things you wish had happened don’t or there are things you wish you’d been able to do, but can’t. There are other couples in a similar position.’

The Prime Minister’s tough stance against Russia appears to have won her fans all round the country. More than half of voters said the PM was doing well, compared to just 23 per cent who said she was not handling it well.

By contrast, the public had a much worse view of Jeremy Corbyn, who has come under fire for his failure to point the finger at Moscow.

Just 18 per cent of those asked said he had performed well in the days after the attempted murder of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the nerve agent Novichok. The YouGov poll for the Times found 39 per cent said he was doing badly.
