£423 plastic bag!

Designer label creates this ‘must-have’ holdall – but would you take it to Tesco?

WHEN the rest of the world is trying to rid the planet of plastic bags, it may seem odd that a designer label has created one as a must-have accessory.

But at £423 – rather than 5p from a supermarket – you’re unlikely to see fashion firm Celine’s creation littering the countryside.

The accessory made its debut on this year’s spring and summer catwalks in Paris last October.

It features Celine’s logo, along with a large warning, in four languages, that reads: ‘To avoid danger from suffocation keep this bag away from babies and children.’

Although it is described as plastic, the material is vinyl, which is far tougher than normal supermarket bags. Fashion experts say buyers are more likely to use it to show off other luxury items inside. The bag comes with a choice of a lambskin clutch or a little black wallet with a gold snap, although it is thought consumers can ask to buy it on its own for a slightly reduced price.

Small numbers have been designed at Celine’s workshops in Paris and shipped to the US, where they are on sale in Seattle for $590 (£423). In July, the bag – which can be recycled – will be made available at another Celine outlet in Vancouver. The label does not plan to sell it online.

The ‘plastic’ bag was dreamt up by designer Phoebe Philo. It is her second-to-last creation before she leaves the label. Lifestyle blogger Tina Lundin said: ‘A bit of humour is always good when it comes to fashion.’

However, her latest creation has been ridiculed on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘The last plastic bag I had hanging around in the car served a travel-sick six-yearold very well. Imagine shouting, “not in the Celine darling!”.’
