CITY-DWELLERS have a worse sense of smell because traffic fumes damage nasal cells and affect the ability to distinguis­h scents, says scent researcher Tim Jacobs, of Cardiff University. While there’s not much you can do about the traffic, strong bleaches, chemical cleaners and air fresheners can also have an effect on sense of smell, as they stun or coat the nerves of the nose to prevent you noticing smells.
