You’re no longer the apple of my eye

-

MY EYES wander around the room. It’s bright and airy and welcoming. then I see you and I want to look away, but find myself staring. I recall not long ago you were smooth, healthy, appealing... now look at you! You have changed. the smoothness you once boasted has gone, replaced by the puckering of your skin as I notice the wrinkles developing. I recall the last time I saw you, in the supermarket. When was that? two or maybe even three weeks ago? You looked so bright, full of potential. But so much has changed since then. As I look at those around you, I fear you will now be overlooked and worry for your future. I wonder if I am to blame. Is it my fault in any way? But I know I would not have changed a thing, I would still have chosen you anyway. I had no way of predicting the outcome. I could not have known how the ravages of time would have affected you. I sigh as I realise there is no place for you here. Oh, dear apple in my fruit bowl, I’m sorry, there’s only one place for you now . . . and that’s the bin!
