Poison plot Trump didn’t mention

- By Jason Groves Political Editor

DONALD Trump made no mention of the Salisbury attack in a phone call with Vladimir Putin, the White House said.

The US President rang his Russian counterpart to congratulate him following his controversial re-election at the weekend.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including terrorism, Syria, arms control and North Korea.

But asked if Mr Trump raised the Salisbury attack, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders yesterday said: ‘I don’t believe it came up on the specific call.’ It comes after Mr Trump signed a joint letter with French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel that backed Britain and laid the blame for the attack at the door of the Kremlin.

The Elysee Palace said Mr Macron used a call to Mr Putin on Monday to raise the Salisbury attack. Last night Downing Street said Theresa May had ‘no plans’ to make a congratulatory call to Mr Putin.

Jeremy Corbyn was mocked by his own MPs yesterday for suggesting Russia is sent a sample of the Novichok nerve agent.

He said this would allow Moscow to ‘say categorically’ if they ordered the assassination attempt. But Labour MP Ian Austin said: ‘Does anyone seriously think Putin will say “Thanks for the sample ... I’m sorry to say that it did come from Russia”.’
