Somewhere under the rainbow … a monarch of the glen
HIS antlers glowing golden as the sun briefly emerges in the storm-lashed Highlands, a stag stands majestically beneath a perfect rainbow.
The scene – perhaps striking enough to rival Sir Edwin Landseer’s 1851 painting The Monarch of the Glen – was captured by nature lover Stephen Davies.
He had driven to Glen Etive with visiting relatives when they spotted the stag under the rainbow on Friday. ‘It was a wow moment – one of those moments you don’t expect to see,’ said Mr Davies, 47, a phone shop manager from Tullibody, Clackmannanshire.
‘It was just the perfect opportunity to take a picture … to capture something special. I could not resist.’ Glen Etive – said to be one of the wettest places in the country, with more than 130in of rain a year – was used as a location in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall and Mel Gibson’s 1 5 movie Braveheart.
The Monarch of the Glen was put up for auction by the drinks firm Diageo in 2016 but was saved for the nation after a campaign to raise £4million. It is now owned by the National Galleries of Scotland.
