Want to change direction? Become a driving instructor

- SARAH HARRIS

AFTER 30 years in the RAF, Stewart Aitken decided to switch careers.

The 56-year- old had been born and raised on an RAF base and joined the Armed Forces in the Eighties.

Stewart always loved cars, which featured heavily in his job as he drove in landscapes ranging from Middle Eastern deserts to the German countryside.

He left the RAF in 2013 before retraining as a driving instructor in 2016. Stewart then discovered RED Driving School. He qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with RED in September 2017.

Stewart, from Hull, feels the highlight of his job is coaching his students through their driving ‘journey’.

He says: ‘There’s nothing more satisfying than being able to impart my experience and driving knowledge on to others.

‘I’m so glad I found RED. I’m able to do something I really love, while helping others to appreciate the road.’

Meanwhile Alfie Zufolo, 43, of Battersea, South London, had trained as a broker consultant in the City before becoming a financial adviser with Barclays.

He wanted a new career that enabled him to look after his daughter, so began training to be a driving instructor with RED. Alfie qualified in 2014, following six months on a trainee licence.

He would encourage anyone looking for a flexible career to consider joining RED. He adds: ‘It’s a good choice if you are seeking flexibility in your career and wish to be your own manager.

‘If you can buddy up, this will be very beneficial. Becoming a driving instructor can be lonely at first, so it’s great to have someone to make the change with.’
