Trump: I’ll thump Obama’s deputy... and make him cry!

- From Tom Leonard in New York

DONALD Trump yesterday threatened to knock down Joe Biden and make him cry after the former US vice president admitted he ‘wanted to beat the hell out of him’.

The President, 71, squared up to the Democrat, 75, on Twitter as the politicians engaged in a bizarre chest-beating exchange.

It came after Mr Biden referred to lewd remarks Mr Trump had made in 2005 as he spoke to students at a rally on Tuesday about sexual assault.

‘A guy who ended up becoming our national leader said, “I can grab a woman anywhere and she likes it”,’ Mr Biden said. ‘They asked me if I’d like to debate this gentleman, and I said, “No … if we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him”.’

Mr Trump tweeted yesterday: ‘Crazy Joe Biden is trying to act like a tough guy. Actually, he is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault ... he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!’

Mr Biden had made similar comments during the 2016 election campaign when, as Barack Obama’s vice president, he addressed a rally for the Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.

‘He [Mr Trump] said, “Because I’m famous ... I can do things other people can’t”,’ Mr Biden said. ‘What a disgusting assertion ... I wish we were in high school and I could take him behind the gym.’

At the time, Mr Trump said: ‘I’d love that. Mr Tough Guy … You know when he’s Mr Tough Guy? When he’s standing behind a microphone ... he wants to bring me to the back of the barn. Oh, some things in life you could really love doing.’

There has been speculation Mr Biden could run for the White House against Mr Trump in 2020. He has called the President’s conduct ‘troubling’ and ‘bizarre’, claiming he does not understand how to govern.

He has also accused Mr Trump of emboldening white supremacists ‘with messages of comfort and support’ after violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer. The President has denounced Mr Biden as a ‘gaffe machine’, ‘delusional’ and ‘not very bright’.

÷Donald Trump’s lead lawyer for the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election resigned last night.

Some reports claimed John Dowd, 77, stepped down in frustration at Mr Trump ignoring his advice.
