Should McEnroe net more than Navratilova?

-

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA is moaning she is paid only 10 per cent of what John McEnroe earns for TV work at Wimbledon (Mail). It should not be a case of increasing her pay to his level, but rather reducing his salary. The BBC is profligate in giving licence payers’ money to retired tennis players for stating the blindingly obvious. The rate paid to McEnroe is obscene.

MIKE WRIGHT, Reading, Berks.

WITH regard to people being paid different amounts, it’s a simple matter to resolve. At your interview, you negotiate a salary. If at a later date you are not happy with this pay, you renegotiate with your employer. If they refuse to pay you more, resign and go elsewhere. You don’t get what you deserve, but what you negotiate.

BARRY THOMAS, Fiskerton, Notts. WHEN two TV presenters are sitting next to each other doing the same job, there is criticism if the man is paid more than the woman. Shouldn’t we be asking why we pay two people to present a programme when one can do the job?

CLIVE WHICHELOW, London SW19.

IT’S skill, quality, entertainment value and audience appreciation that count. Game, set and match to McEnroe.
