First winner of Eurovision dies aged 94
THE winner of the first Eurovision song contest has died aged 94.
Lys Assia, pictured, triumphed for Switzerland at the inaugural competition with song Refrain in 1956.
After her victory, Miss Assia sang again for her country in 1957 and in 1958, when she finished second.
Remarkably, in 2012, at the age of 87, she tried to make a comeback. However, her efforts to represent Switzerland for a fourth time were unsuccessful.
