PICK OF THE DAY
THE QUEEN: HER COMMONWEALTH STORY, 9PM, BBC1
ON FEBRUARY 6, 1952, the Queen became Head of the Commonwealth on the death of her father, King George VI; the following year, aged just 27, she embarked on her first tour of the Commonwealth and its territories. Here, George Alagiah (pictured with former South African politician Dr Mamphela Ramphele) follows in the Queen’s footsteps, travelling to Tonga — and also taking in Australia, Ghana, India and South Africa — to explore the story of how a shy young Queen turned into a confident, globally respected monarch. Princess Anne is among those helping to chart her mother’s incredible journey.
