LEAGUE TWO THIS WEEKEND

- TOM FARMERY

HERO OF THE WEEK

JACK LESTER. Chesterfield’s survival fight starts here. Lester’s side were six points behind Grimsby before yesterday’s 3-1 win over promotion hopefuls Notts County. The gap is now just three points and they have two games in hand on the Mariners. The two sides play each other next month and it could be decisive in the battle to avoid relegation to the National League.

ZEROES OF THE WEEK

NEWPORT’S DEFENCE. Not long ago Newport were aiming for the playoffs but daft errors have meant they have won only once in their last 10 games. Crewe won 2-1 at Rodney Parade on Saturday and the visitors’ first came after more bad defending. Ben White failed to clear and was then beaten too easily by Harry McKirdy, who scored.

GOAL OF THE WEEK

HARRY PELL (Crawley v CHELTENHAM). After putting Crawley winger Lewis Young on his backside, Pell advanced to the edge of the box and struck a right-foot effort that swerved past keeper Glenn Morris. It opened the scoring in the Robins’ 5-3 away win.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

‘It was emphatic, it really was,’ said Luton boss NATHAN JONES after his side beat Barnet 2-0 to move top of League Two. ‘We were outstanding, the way we moved the ball. It was all set up today for us to lose the game.’

STAT OF THE WEEK

1,620 — Grimsby have now gone 18 games or 1,620 minutes without a win after they lost 4-0 at Coventry.
