The prime suspect in the IRA Hyde Park bombing was given £50,000 in legal aid, even though the families of soldiers killed in the 1982 attack were refused funding five times. John Downey, who is accused of murdering four soldiers in the nail bomb attack, was given the sum to fund his defence in a 2014 trial, which collapsed.

Black cab rapist John Worboys received £166,554 aid for his 2009 trial despite reports he owned a number of properties and had £80,000 in the bank.

The killers of Fusilier Lee Rigby were handed more than £200,000 in legal aid for their trial in 2013. Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 23, received £138,803 and £73,809.36 respective­ly. After being convicted of murder, they were accused of using the hearing to boast of the killing.

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary received more than £140,000 in legal aid in his bid to dodge prison for gathering support for Islamic State but was jailed for five and a half years.
