HOLLAND BOUNCE BACK TO CRUSH RONALDO’S PORTUGAL

-

HOLLAND recovered from Friday’s loss against England to inflict a damning defeat on European champions Portugal. The Portuguese, who included five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Leicester City’s Adrien Silva in their starting XI, were unable to put up any resistance to the dominant Dutch. Holland, who failed to qualify for the World Cup, were fired into the lead by former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay. His 11th-minute strike was the result of an inch-perfect Donny van de Beek cross, and there was more to follow. Former Liverpool man Ryan Babel was next to get in on the act, heading home from close range, before Virgil van Dijk added the third just ahead of half-time to give the Oranje their first win under new boss Ronald Koeman. With the game wrapped up for Holland, the last 45 minutes lacked any real vigour, with Ronaldo being substitued before full time. Portugal’s Joao Cancelo was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
