THEN: As the most infamous of the Ewing clan, JR’s escapades were matched by Hagman’s real-life extravagance. He admitted drinking five bottles of champagne a day while filming scenes, including the nailbiting 1980 storyline in which JR was shot.

NOW: After Dallas ended, Hagman had odd appearances in U.S. TV series. But all that champagne had taken its toll: following a liver transplant in 1995, he developed throat cancer and died in 2012.
