Inheritance greed

-

SO JEREMY Hunt wants a ‘hypothecated’ tax, with money going directly to the NHS, to end the unfairness where your loved one’s assets can be cleaned out if you get dementia.

if the relative is in a care home, what need do they have of those assets? The inheritances of their families is not the same thing.

is it fairer for everyone to pay more tax so some people can get their hands on the family home? This is not economic sense, but greed.

Do we really want to spend a lot of money extending the lives of the chronically ill and very old, so they have to endure a drawn- out, agonising debilitation?

We need to tackle the issue of our woeful inadequacy in addressing the end of life.

SARAH MILLS, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. THE claim that the public backs a NHS tax would be credible if we weren’t already taxed to the hilt. We have our wages taxed, are forced to pay council tax, road tax, VAT on essentials, alcohol and tobacco, but what do we have to show for all of our billions?

The roads are littered with potholes, infrastructure is crumbling and the NHS is in dire straits due to lack of investment.

if our taxes had gone where they were meant to, perhaps we wouldn’t mind paying a little extra.

A. SMITH, March, Cambs.
