Mum crushed by bricks had just left son, 3, at nursery
A YOUNG mother left fighting for her life after being crushed by falling bricks had dropped her three-year-old son off at nursery just moments earlier.
Michaela Boor was critically injured when the pallet attached to a 70ft crane fell on her as she walked past a building site in Mile End, east London. She had been heading to a supermarket after dropping her son at the nursery at St Paul with St Luke Primary School.
Miss Boor, who recently got engaged, should have been celebrating her 29th birthday yesterday. Instead she remained in a critical condition last night, the Metropolitan Police said.
A friend said: ‘ Her family are by her side in the hospital and the doctors have said it is 50/50 – so we are trying to be hopeful.
‘Everyone has seen the pallets wobbling around up there. That thing is a death trap. With the school so close by it could have been one of the kids.’
Building work at Bow Corner, a development of luxury flats costing up to £650,000, had been halted yesterday as the Health and Safety Executive was called in to investigate.
Miss Boor, who lives a few minutes from the site, had been walking with another mother when she was crushed on Tuesday at around 9.30am. A male witness was treated for shock.
‘A brick hit the other mum’s hand. She managed to jump out of the way… but Michaela got caught under it,’ Miss Boor’s friend said.
Miss Boor had announced her engagement to her partner of four years, Andy Murgatroyd, by posting a picture of a ring on social media just over a week ago.
Building firm Maytrix Construction, where her father Matthew works as a bricklayer, has set up a fundraising page to raise £20,000 to help the young family.
Locals have since criticised safety at the site, with many saying it should have been cordoned off.
Mile End councillor Shah Alam said he has raised concerns with Tower Hamlets Council, adding: ‘My neighbour doesn’t feel safe walking her children to school.’
The Health and Safety Executive said it was continuing its investigation in conjunction with the Met.
The Bow Corner development of 19 flats, by Higgins Homes, is expected to be completed this year.
