FOOTBALL DIGEST
VINCENT KOMPANY has called on Manchester City to tighten their grip on an ‘incredible season’ as the club prepare for a vital run of games domestically and in the Champions League. Kompany said: ‘It starts now, really, but we have worked very hard this season to be in this position.’ AN investigation into Crewe Alexandra will be carried out by the QC charged with leading the Football Association’s review into child sex abuse, should the club fail to provide one. Clive Sheldon, who is overseeing the FA probe, has asked a number of clubs to provide him with a ‘structured report’ into allegations of abuse and, if not, will launch his own investigation. The development will ramp up pressure on Crewe, the club at the centre of the scandal. Officials at the League Two side sparked fury when it emerged they had dumped plans to carry out an investigation which they had earlier promised. Following the jailing of prolific paedophile and former club coach Barry Bennell, Crewe said they wouldn’t be launching an independent probe into what went on. They claimed there was no reason to ‘duplicate the thorough enquiries’ of Cheshire Police, who said they had found no evidence that anyone at the club knew about Bennell’s offending. MANCHESTER CITY and Chelsea both breezed through to the semi-finals of the women’s Champions League last night. City won 5-3 at Swedish side Linkoping to complete a 7-3 aggregate win and set up a last-four meeting with Lyon. Chelsea beat Montpellier 3-1 at Kingston, going through 5-1 on aggregate. They now face Wolfsburg.
