WHAT HAS HE GOT?

AS his team recovered from an early barrage in a recent game, Jon Nolan (right) was the main force who helped Shrewsbury regain their composure. Within minutes of his team gaining a foothold, Nolan actually drove a penalty against the bar and it looked as though it might not be their day. But Paul Hurst’s men are made of stern stuff as their run to the top of League One proves. Nolan was still finding space to collect the ball in the middle third and supply accurate passes to his wide men and striker. These made forward runs whenever Nolan received the ball — a sign of confidence in his passing ability. He comfortably dodged challenges with nimble feet as Shrewsbury slowly gained the ascendancy. His movement was excellent: he was always looking for a second pass after playing the ball and was desperate to be involved. He would, for example, threaten to go forward for a one-two only to move back again, deceiving his marker and receiving the ball in space.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

NOLAN looks as though he has a point to prove, having experienced the difficulties of climbing from the foot of the ladder. He was released by Everton as an 18-year-old and fought his way up from nonLeague. The key is to develop further, keep that desire now he has tasted some success for the first time. He takes responsibility, works hard for 90 minutes and, when he makes errors, is quick to recover. His team spirit also shines through — when a team-mate didn’t pass to him for a clear scoring opportunity, he did not berate him. He has added goals to his game but must continue to drive into scoring positions. He can pass and is a team player with an eye for goal. At 25, he is proof it is never too late and he may find himself moving up a level with his impressive team.
