MY agapanthus is pot-bound. How do I avoid damaging the plant when I split it? Mrs. E. Hales, Surrey. ONCE out of the pot, cut through stubborn roots, tease out the tangles, shake off the soil and look for young dormant buds.

Each division should carry a bud and three or four healthy roots. Re-pot the best, using fresh potting compost.
