Stars won’t sign if fans can’t behave, says Moyes

- By HARRY SLAVIN

DAVID MOYES has warned that repeat scenes of crowd trouble at the London Stadium could prevent West Ham from attracting top signings. West Ham host Southampton today — their first game since the ugly scenes on and off the pitch during the 3-0 defeat by Burnley three weeks ago. And Moyes said: ‘I want this club to appeal to really good international players. ‘I want them to say, “I want to join West Ham United”. I don’t think what happened against Burnley is going to make those players want to join us. ‘Players want to come to a club where the supporters are right behind the team. You don’t come somewhere they’re not.’ Both Manuel Lanzini and James Collins will have late fitness tests while Joe Hart will start in goal. Moyes will also be able to welcome back Arthur Masuaku from a six-game ban for spitting at Wigan midfielder Nick Powell. ‘Arthur’s ban has been big,’ said Moyes. ‘But he deserved it. I’ve never seen a man more remorseful than Arthur.’ Mark Hughes will use the memory of one Southampton great escape to help inspire another. In 1999, Hughes was part of a Saints side who looked destined for relegation, having spent the entire season in the bottom three. But inspired by Matt Le Tissier and Marian Pahars, they drew two and won three of their last five matches to beat the drop. ‘My abiding memory of my time here when we were in trouble was that everybody stuck together,’ said Hughes, now the Saints manager. ‘The crowd got behind us and got us over the line. Hopefully they will again.’
