Price vows to fight on despite brutal knockout

- DANIEL MATTHEWS

DAVID PRICE is battered, bruised, but fortunately fine in the wake of his chilling knockout defeat by Alexander Povetkin. The Liverpool fighter was laid out by a brutal two-punch combination from the Russian heavyweight on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s unification clash with Joseph Parker on Saturday night. After the fighters exchanged knockdowns in the third round, an overhand right by Povetkin left Price motionless in the fifth. The 34-year-old stood upright — but barely conscious — before a huge left hook sent him crashing to the canvas. Price required immediate medical attention before rising to his feet. Despite suffering a fifth knockout defeat, the Briton vowed to fight on. He wrote on Twitter: ‘I’m proud I put it all on the line in front of a massive audience and I’d do it all again.’ For Povetkin, the mandatory challenger to Joshua’s WBA title, the finish was the perfect message to send Britain’s unified champion.
