So has your ten-year-old got a licence for that, Edward?

- By Fiona Parker

HE certainly didn’t look happy about being dragged along to granny’s for church on Sunday.

By yesterday, however, little Viscount Severn – the ten-year-old son of Prince Edward and the countess of Wessex – was looking decidedly more perky.

And with good reason – he was driving the family Land Rover Discovery.

In what would be a dream come true for most children, James was pictured beaming at the wheel of the £28,000 4x4 in the private grounds of Windsor castle.

It was unclear who else was with him in the car, but the young royal’s elevated position suggested he might have been getting help by sitting on someone’s lap as he motored along ‘reasonably fast’.

Either way, his mum and dad didn’t seem ready to be driven around by their young son just yet. Sophie was out in a horsedrawn carriage with James’s 14-year- old sister, Lady Louise Windsor, and Edward was spotted riding a horse.

James’s demeanour was a world away from 24 hours earlier. On Sunday the Queen’s youngest grandchild was seen sobbing ahead of the Easter Sunday service at St George’s chapel in Windsor.

Under the law, motorists do not need a provisional licence to drive a car on private land – but insurance companies would refuse to pay out in the event of an accident.

James, who is tenth in line to the throne, made his first official appearance as a member of the royal family at the Thames River Pageant for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, when he was f our.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the photographs.
