Forget rosé or Aperol Spritz, we should all be drinking a Negroni

- By Faye White Showbusiness Reporter

LOOKING forward to a chilled glass of rosé now the weather is warming up? You shouldn’t be.

For society magazine Tatler has called time on the hugely popular thirst-quencher and declared it is ‘banishing this fruity little upstart to the Med’.

Elderflower and the once-trendy Italian cocktail Aperol Spritz have also been wiped off its new list of ‘in’ and ‘out’ drinks.

Instead Tatler, which claims it has been ‘witnessing smart boozing for 309 years’, has put Negroni top of its tipple list for this year. In case you’ve never heard of it, Negroni (pictured) is an aperitif mix of equal measures of vermouth rosso, Campari and gin and garnished with orange peel.

Tatler describes the drink as ‘the big-hitter, the top dog’ and ‘very happening’. Even those who don’t like the bitter taste are still drinking them, it proclaims.

Joining it on the list are Champagne, ‘just because’, and straight vodka, which the magazine describes as ‘never not cool’.

Likewise, gin and tonic is now deemed ‘a classic turned hip’.

And whisky is ‘no longer just for men’ because ‘all alcohol is now unisex’. Tequila is recommended because ‘if you don’t mix, you’ll be fresh as a daisy the morning after’ while its wayward cousin espresso tequila is ‘the best way to start the evening’.
