EYE-WATERING PAY AND PERKS
MOST people would find the £4.5million paid to the average FTSE 100 boss eyewatering – but Sir Martin Sorrell is in a league of his own.
The WPP boss has received £210million from the advertising giant in the past six years, sparking protest from City investors. In 2015, he pocketed £70.4million, one of the biggest payouts in corporate history.
He took a £22million pay cut the following year amid a backlash over excessive pay in British boardrooms.
But this still meant he took home £48million, including a lavish package of benefits worth £228,000. This included £37,000 for a car, £68,000 for healthcare and an £86,000 allowance for accommodation when he is travelling around the world for business – even when he stays in his own New York flat.
He was previously given £274,000 to pay for his wife, Cristiana, to join him on his business trips but has paid those costs since 2015. This year his pay is expected to take a further hit after WPP revealed its worst financial results since 2009.
Sir Martin, who is estimated to be worth nearly £500million, said last month: ‘My pay depends on performance. If the value of the company rises I do extremely well. The company is where my wealth is.’
