CONCUSSION BLOW TO DALEY’S GOLDEN BID

- RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

TOM DALEY has revealed how his bid for two more Commonwealth golds has been hampered by concussion. The 23-year-old says he spent weeks out of action after a crash landing in training last month and, worryingly, has not attempted a dive off the 10m board since. With his first of two events, the 10m synchronised, scheduled for a week on Friday, it has been a significant issue in his build-up to the Games. Daley was cleared to return to diving only five days ago as he attempts to add synchro and 10m individual gold to the individual golds he won in 2010 and 2014, and the synchro title he claimed eight years ago. Daley (right) said: ‘I haven’t had the best of preparations. I have had a few illnesses that have prevented me from training as much as I would like and I had a concussion, so I was out of the pool for a little bit. ‘I missed my hands on a dive and smashed my head on the water and then that was me out for a little bit to get over the nausea and the dizziness. It wasn’t nice. ‘I had to have a few weeks where I wasn’t able to do very much and that was only a few weeks ago. I am coming back and doing the best I can with what I’ve got. But I’m feeling good now, which is the most important part.’
