Corbyn’s home extension bid rejected by Labour council

- By Vanessa Allen and Ross Parker

HE has made no secret of his grand designs for running the country. But Jeremy Corbyn’s plans to extend his £750,000 home have received a vote of no confidence from his local Labour council.

The Labour leader had asked to move the front wall of the 1960s terrace in Islington, North London, forward by around 3ft to extend the ground floor sitting room.

But the application – made in his wife Laura’s name – for the single-storey extension was rejected as too radical by Islington Council. The council is a Labour stronghold, with 47 of the 48 councillors.

It rejected the proposal after one of Mr Corbyn’s neighbours objected. Officials ruled it would ‘harm the appearance, rhythm and integrity of the terrace and the character and appearance of the area’.

They added: ‘This harm would not be outweighed by the small benefit provided by the extension to occupiers of the property.’

Mr Corbyn, who has been MP for Islington North since 1983, declined to comment on the planning decision.
