AUGUSTA DIARY
LYLE ROLLS IT BACK
SANDY LYLE (right) was having a ball on the 30th anniversary of his Masters win until slipping up late on. A 36-foot putt for eagle at 15 was the highlight of his 74, before bogeys at 17 and 18.
TED’S WIZARD FINISH
JOURNEYMAN Ted Potter Jnr should check to see if he is related to Harry after his clubs turned into magic wands. Standing on the 12th tee five over par, he birdied five of the next six and, despite a bogey on 18, signed for a very respectable 73.
BEER WE GO, JASON
JASON DAY has been known to take a little too long over 18 holes but he can’t be blamed for the hold-up in his opening round. He managed to land his ball in a punter’s pint (right) but was forced to wait for the thirsty fellow to down his beer before getting his ball back.
(GRAND)SON OF A GUN
HE has six Green Jackets but Jack Nicklaus has no doubt about his favourite Augusta moment — his 15-year-old grandson GT, caddying for him in the par-3 contest, aceing the ninth. ‘I don’t know if I have had a more special day on a golf course… WOW,’ tweeted Jack.
BEST FOOT FORWARD
TONY FINAU is Augusta’s Steve Morrow with a bit of Bear Grylls thrown in. The 6ft 4in former basketball centre teed off less than 24 hours after dislocating his left ankle (and popping it back in) while celebrating a hole-in-one in the par-3 contest.
GO BIG OR GO HOME
THE four par-5s are there to be taken advantage of by the big hitters. Tiger is a mindboggling 142 under at the 2nd, 8th, 13th and 15th holes over his career. But he’ll have to raise his game after playing them yesterday only in level par.
