TODAY
marks the 50th anniversary of the untimely death of one of Britain’s greatest sporting heroes — legendary F1 racing driver Jim Clark.
To honour the passing, aged 32, at Hockenheim race circuit of this humble farmer from Duns in the Scottish Borders who twice became Grand Prix world champion comes an epic new book, Jim Clark — The Best Of The Best by David Tremayne (£80, evro publishing.com). Some 20 years in the making, with 425 photos over 520 pages, it has a highoctane £80 price tag to match. Tremayne says of Clark: ‘Stubborn and notoriously indecisive outside the car, he would nervously chew his fingernails, but he was a genius when he got behind the wheel.’
The Jim Clark Museum in Duns, subject of a £1.6 million revamp, hosts two days of celebrations this weekend.
