Sandy can still enjoy 5-wheel freedom
IT WAS sad to see the recent departure of Emmerdale’s irrepressible Sandy Thomas (pictured), played by Freddie Jones, 90, as the character headed off for a new life in Australia. But the good news is that the keen mobility scooter rider will be able to get a similar five-wheel model Down Under. Many of the everyday benefits and opportunities of scooter ownership were demonstrated regularly by Sandy, who was able to get out and about and play a strong and active role in the Emmerdale community. Five-wheel scooters like his are particularly stable, comfortable and agile, giving more legroom and foot space, with adaptive footplates that give extra support to the legs. And the ergonomic forward sitting position makes for safer weight distribution on hills and over bumps. They also have a very good turning circle, making it easier to navigate inside shops, or anywhere where space is limited. And their manoeuvrability gives great control on kerbs, with the ability to climb and descend them at angles without tipping or beaching. As Sandy clearly showed, a good mobility scooter can make a massive difference to a user’s quality of life, especially when it’s one that has been so expertly designed.
