Bolt warns Blake: Win 100m or don’t come home

- By RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

THE second fastest man in history is being fuelled by motivational messages from the quickest as he pursues a way back to the limelight in Commonwealth Games 100 metres final today. Yohan Blake has not won an individual title since he took world gold in 2011, but the Jamaican, 28, will go into the sprint showdown as a huge favourite in a distinctly moderate field. He qualified fastest yesterday, clocking 10.06sec to win his semi-final ahead of England’s Adam Gemili, the 2014 100m silver medallist, who was third quickest overall in 10.11sec despite an adductor injury. ‘There is a lot more in the tank,’ said Blake (below). ‘Usain Bolt told me, “You’ve got to win, you’ve got to do your best or you can’t go home. I believe in you”.’ Gemili required treatment on his injury last night, but said: ‘It won’t bother me. It’s 100m, I’ll put my body out there and run as best as I can. I leave everything on the track.’ The men’s 100m final is around 1.15pm British time. England made a perfect start in the athletics courtesy of Nick Miller, who broke the 12-year-old Games record in winning hammer gold with 80.26m. Miller, the silver medallist in Glasgow four years ago, said: ‘Things got a little more serious last year. I got married and that changed my perspective on things. ‘Everything seems to be slotting into place and this result is the end of a lot of effort over the last year.’ Elsewhere, England’s Asha Philip was the quickest qualifier for the women’s 100m final in 11.21sec, and Tom Bosworth took silver in the 20km race walk.
