Spieth’s 64 lights up Augusta

- CHARLES SALE reports from Augusta

JORDAN SPIETH had a remarkable final day at the Masters, shooting a 64 — only one off the course record. The former champion, who started the day on five under par and seemingly out of contention to claim a second green jacket, carded nine birdies in what was a faultless round until a bogey at the 18th after his drive hit a tree. This brilliant exhibition proved Spieth had banished his final-day demons at the Masters from 2016, when he threw away a five-stroke lead to Britain’s surprise winner Danny Willett. Britain’s Paul Casey also had a great chance of equalling the record before his bogey-bogey finish. He dropped shots at the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a 65. ‘I’m going to remember that for a long time,’ he said.
