Police shoot man ‘after gun threat’
POLICE shot a man dead at a petrol station yesterday after he allegedly made threats and claimed he was armed.
The 1-year-old man was shot by officers after a stand-off on the forecourt of an Esso petrol station in Romford, east London, at around . 5am. He was pronounced dead about half an hour later.
Claiming he had a gun, the man himself had called police from a nearby house at 3.50am, Scotland Yard said. He then left the property, apparently taking the weapon with him.
Last night the Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed it had recovered a non-police issue gun and was investigating ‘the fatal shooting of a 1year-old man by police officers’.
The incident comes amid a wave of shootings and stabbings that have rocked the capital. London’s monthly murder rate has surpassed that of New York for the first time.
